Former Dancing with the Stars champ Julianne Hough had one of the most controversial Halloween costumes.

Multiple media outlets including Entertainment Tonight to Good Morning America talked about her costume (Orange Is The New Black’s Crazy Eyes) and her decision to wear blackface.

While the Footloose star frustrated both fans and critics with her controversial costume, Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox found Hough’s costume sad.

“I was not offended. I thought it was a shame that (Hough) is in this country, that she would wear blackface and not understand the historical implications of that,” Cox told CNN.  “I don’t think Julianne is making a specific informed choice to comment on blackness. I just think it’s out of this ignorance.”

While she does not totally condemn Hough’s controversial decision, Cox told E! that she was pleased with fans that honored the NetFlix series on Halloween.

“It’s so amazingly flattering.” Cox added. “I don’t know if that’s a sign that you’ve made it, but it’s wonderful.”

Hough apologized about the incident on Twitter by stating: “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
