‘Orange is the New Black’ Writer Files For Divorce

The Emmy-winning hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black has done more than entertain half the world–it has changed lives. Not just for cast mates like Uzo Aduba (who has recently received an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series), but helped others like Samira Wiley, who plays “Poussey” in the show, find love. What better way to find love than on set?

Meet Lauren Morelli, a writer of the critically acclaimed Orange is the New Black. Morelli was married to television writer Steve Basilone for two years prior to their separation at the end of the last year. Their recent filing for divorce came to light: according to Morelli, she was married for five months before the realization of her true sexuality came into view. Like the characters she wrote about, she too realized she was a lesbian.

While writing the storyline of Piper Chapman and Alex Vause, played by the talented Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon, Morelli stated, “I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like.” In a positive light, the separation was of joint accordance. No public drama here.

During the airing of the 2014 Emmy Awards last month, Lauren Morelli and Samira Wiley publicly announced their relationship. Fans, however, were spewing about their relationship for months as the Instagram photos were quite hinting from the obvious affection in the couples’ selfies.
