Laverne Cox will receive GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is presented to a media professional of the LGBT community, who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.
The Orange is the New Black star will receive GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award. It will be presented to her from Juno star, Ellen Page. When Page came out openly gay last month, she said that Cox gave her the inspiration. Past recipients include Ellen DeGeneres, Wanda Sykes, Melissa Etheridge, Rufus Wainwright and Sir Ian McKellan.
Like Cox’s character in OITNB, she is transgender. She is the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a popular television series.
“Laverne Cox has reshaped the way Americans see transgender people and raised the bar in diverse representations of the LGBT community in entertainment,” said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis.
The GLAAD Media Awards will be on April 12th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Jennifer Lopez will also be present to receive the Vanguard Award.
