Actors Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem have added their names to a controversial open letter proclaiming Israel’s military action against Gaza as “genocide.”
The husband and wife stars joined other Spanish celebrities in the letter, which has been released through several Spanish news outlets.
The letter urges the European Union to intervene in the conflict, which has so far killed over 1,200 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip including hundreds of civilians, many of whom are children. It also demands an immediate ceasefire and urges Israel to lift the long-standing blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Given the deeply-divided global opinions on the conflict, the letter has generated both support and strong criticism as expected.
Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization, responded with the statement:
“It [Israel] did what every country on this planet, including Spain, would do if hundreds of rockets were hurled at their population centers by an internationally known terrorist organization.”
What do you think of the couple’s involvement with the letter, PopWrapped readers? Do you think it will hurt their future careers in Hollywood? Let us know in the comments!
