CNN confirmed that it will be taking the struggling Piers Morgan Live! off the air next month. According to Deadline, the news show “scored its second-lowest numbers to date last week,” and its struggles have been evident for a while.
The CNN network is beginning to look for a replacement for Morgan’s primetime slot. Bill Weir, recently hired by CNN, is among the candidates to take over Morgan’s slot. Morgan says that he will continue his relationship with the network after the show’s cancellation.
The network renamed Morgan’s show last year after “it notched a yearly low in the ratings.” But poor ratings have plagued the show since its 2011 premiere, which took over Larry King’s slot.
Morgan’s talk show floundered last fall after “Fox News’ revamp of its long standing primetime.”
The cancellations of Piers Morgan Live! and Anderson Cooper’s 10 PM show leave the network’s primetime “seeking new shows, potential new faces and Jeff Zucker praying for better ratings.”
With few exceptions, CNN has been struggling to recapture high ratings since Zucker took over in January of 2012. Zucker will have to find something fast to fill his open slots, “before the all-important upfronts in April.”
