Horror fans rejoiced on Friday when and announcement was made by Clive Barker on Facebook. Twenty-six years after the original Hellraiser was released, the writer and director of this quintessential horror classic broke the news that he will be at the helm of a remake of his film. Barker went on to insist that none other than Doug Bradley would be returning as Pinhead.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Clive Barker said,
“My friends, I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Films, in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first Hellraiser film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity – honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film – was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch.”
The original film, based off of a novella by Barker titled The Hellbound Heart, became so popular that it created eight sequels. While Barker was not involved with the sequels, he has written some Hellraiser comics. Barker added that he would be sticking with classic make up techniques in spite of new CGI technology. In addition, Barker will be keeping fans abreast of his progress through his Facebook page.
