Police Ask Google To Disable Waze App’s Cop-Tracking Feature

Police are asking tech-giant Google to disable a feature on Waze that warns drivers when cops are near, stating fear for officers’ safety as the reason.

Police departments are asking tech-giant Google to disable a feature on the Waze app that warns drivers when cops are near. Why? They fear that this could lead to attacks on their officers.

Waze is a very popular app that has more than 50 million users across the globe. The app uses a combination of GPS and social networking to give drivers weather conditions, traffic reports and warnings in real time. The app also shows where speed traps are located and where police have been seen.

Currently, there are no known incidents of people using Waze in ways that have harmed police officers, but with a rise in police shootings, sheriffs are concerned that the app could be used for malicious reasons.

Google has not yet commented on the request.
