In J.K. Rowling’s dazzling books, she carefully crafted a world filled with unusual foods, places, tools, and creatures. Furthermore, she developed an ancient spell-casting language. Let’s take a look at some of those spells and what they do.
1. Petrificus Totalus – Renders target completely immobile
Think how useful this would be if someone was coming after you? Whip out your wand, whisper the spell, and the person falls flat. Quick and easy.
2. Incarcarous – Ties someone up with ropes
Now, if you get into a hostage situation or someone breaks in, this spell would be very useful. Criminals could not escape. It might help cut down on crime.
3. Mobilicorpus – Moves bodies
People fall and get hurt all the time. Many times they become unconscious. Sometimes it can be tricky to retrieve the injured. With this spell, you can get them to safety.
4. Sonorus – Amplifies one’s voice
Who hasn’t needed to be heard? A guardian trying to find a child, a person in a crowd, an authority figure trying to keep the peace – those are all people who need to be heard. This incantation can help with that.
5. Legilimens – Reveals memories and thoughts of target
This could help crack cold cases. Something beloved by a missing person is scanned and the memories reveal themselves. Justice served.
6. Imperio – Makes target obey every command
How useful could this be? In the wrong hands the curse would be deadly. Under anyone else’s control it could get silly.
7. Obscuro – Blindfolds target
Need help with pin-the-tale-on-the-donkey? Want to lead a person to a party? Feeling frisky? Having trouble sleeping? It seems like the spell is quite versatile.
8. Reducto – Explodes object
While it might lead to the unwanted/unneeded destruction of property, it could also help prepare land for building as well as win wars. Instead of bombing enemies, soldiers aim and fire this spell. Instead of a wrecking ball, this spell can take its place.
9. Expelliarmus – Disarming Charm
Self-defense is a good thing. You can neutralize a situation quickly and painlessly. Empowerment is a good thing!
10. Avada Kedavra – The Killing Curse
There are very few uses for this spell. If needed, it should be used by trained professionals in extreme moments. This seems like a last resort.
11. Stupefy – Stuns target
Need to escape a dangerous situation? Want to tag someone in play? This spell is both handy and fun.
12. Incendio – Creates fire
Matches burn out. Lighters don’t always work (especially if they get water in them). An incantation like this will save you hassle and stress.
13. Quietus – Quiets magically amplified voice
It wouldn’t be fun to go around with Sonorus amplifying our voices at all times. This spell is a must. Speaking at a normal sound range is important.
14. Lumos – Makes wand emit light
Candles are smoky. Oil lanterns smell. Flashlights take up a lot of batteries. This spell alleviates all of those issues. It can come in handy when trying to avoid toe stubbing in the middle of the night, too.
15. Colloportus – Locks doors
Forget a key while heading out? Don’t feel safe while staying in? Use this spell for protection!
16. Alohomora – Opens locks
The reverse of the above is always needed to open things up again. Also, you may lose a key. This will save you from being locked in or out.
17. Expecto Patronum – Patronus Charm
Other than making pretty pictures, there might not be a lot of use for this spell in everyday life. It can protect you from attackers, if it’s strong enough. What would your Patronus be?
18. Episkey – Heals minor injuries
Who hasn’t gotten a cut, burn, or scrape and wanted it fixed ASAP? Have you ever been in a situation where there aren’t any bandages? Perfect spell for all parts of life.
19. Oblivate – Erases memories
Surely there’s a memory or two we would all like to forget. Life can be filled with painful or awkward moments. This incantation will relieve that stress.
20. Protego – Shields caster from curses
Again, more self-defense. However, this will come in handy if you can’t get to your wand or there are too many people to fight. It can help you protect others as well. It’s a win-win spell.
21. Reparo – Repairs broken objects
Did you break an heirloom? Have your glasses bitten the dust? Did you just have a fender-bender? An enchantment like this can help fix any damaged good.
22. Nox – Turns off Lumos
Sometimes artificial light is no longer needed. This spell turns said light off. Saving energy is a wonderful thing.
23. Orchideous – Grows flowers from end of wand
Flowers can be expensive. You never know when you need them, or when you will feel like giving them. With a little spell, you can have them!
24. Wingardium Leviosa – Levitates objects
A lot of things are very, very heavy. There may not be someone to help you move them. This spell will be your helper!
25. Accio – Summoning charm
When hasn’t there been a time when you just need something and can’t get to it? This spell will come in handy for things high up or far away. It allows disabled or injured people independence. Perfect spell for all!
