Two years ago, I stumbled upon a tragic story on my Facebook timeline. Many friends of mine were aware of a young woman, named Ali Tracy Nunery, a fellow Cincinnati resident, and were sharing her story. A story of love, loss, and injustice in the very truest sense of the word.
Ali was battling an incredibly rare form of lung cancer, despite never having smoked a cigarette in her life. She was a relatively new wife, and had a brand new baby girl. In what should have been the most joyous, exhausting and positively blissful time of her life, she was forced to spend her time suffering through treatments and fighting against the poison within her own body.
In 2011, cancer conquered Ali, and she left behind her devastated husband, Ben Nunery, and her precious baby girl, Olivia.
The day before their wedding, Ben and Ali closed on their new family home. Ali’s sister, Melanie Tracy Pace, a professional photographer, used the empty dwelling to stage their wedding photos. The house proved to be the perfect venue for capturing that incredibly special day.
It is now two years after Ali’s passing, and Ben and Olivia have decided it is time to move on; but that requires leaving behind the home they shared with Ali. As a way to commemorate the family that never was, and to have some keepsakes for Olivia to cherish later in her life, Ben asked his sister-in-law Melanie to recreate his wedding photos, in the same empty house, with Olivia. The result is a beautiful thing to behold.
Take a look at the photos below, and be sure to check out Melanie’s blog for her own personal thoughts, including encouragement from the dearly departed Ali herself, and strategies to get a wiggly three-year-old in the exact same poses her mommy stood in five years ago.
