Brenda Schmitz lost her battle to ovarian cancer in 2011, leaving behind her husband, David, and four sons, the youngest being Max at age 2 at the time of her passing. Before she passed away, however, she wrote a letter to David and gave it to a friend for safe keeping. She specified to this anonymous friend that when the time was right, she wanted her to deliver it to the local radio station STAR 102.5 to be entered into their annual “Christmas Wish” segment.

Not precisely sure why he was brought to the station, David Schmitz begins to heartwarmingly describe who Brenda was and how caring a human being she had been, even when fighting the illness. The host of the show explains to David that Brenda had asked them to read him a letter and he is quickly bought to tears, along with everyone else in the room.

In the letter, Brenda gives her blessing to David and the woman he is to remarry, whoever that may be. She writes: “She must be quite the lady, and I wish I could have met her.” As well as: “Her efforts are truly appreciated. I love you whoever you are. Talk to me, you are heard.”

In addition to giving David these words of encouragement, she also has made several requests for the people she is leaving behind. She asks that Jane, David’s fiancée, be given a weekend away at a spa to relax and that the doctors and nurses of her cancer ward can be treated to a fun night out with good food and drinks.

Afterwards, David is in complete shock and he explains that, over the past year and a half, Brenda has continued to be with him and his family, as they are able to pick up on messages she leaves them. Amongst the signs was one big one, when his youngest son Max asked Jane if she would be his Mommy. It’s both a wonderfully beautiful and heartbreaking story, and it’s a great reminder to cherish all the time you have with your loved ones, especially during this time of year.
