Today is Thanksgiving in Canada — a day when we all take a break from apologizing to one another and, instead, express our gratitude for the good things in our lives. To honour that tradition, here are ten things that I am particularly grateful for, in no specific order.
Headphones
There really is no better way to tell the random guy on the bus to leave you alone than a nice, oversized pair of headphones. Despite the recent popularity of a particular article professing to teach men how to speak with women wearing headphones, they remain the universal sign for “shh, leave me alone please”. Also, they’re a great way to pretend you’re a rock star during your morning commute.
Late Night Comedy
There is absolutely no way I would be able to survive staying up to date in this election cycle without the help of John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Trevor Noah, as well as the cast and crew of their respective shows. When a nominee for President of the United States of America is caught on film saying “grab her by the pussy”, we need something to help us laugh. Otherwise, we’d all lose our minds!
The Return of DC TV
These are probably the best four shows on television today — and, after the way each season ended last year, fans have been eager for the return of their favourite CW superhero show, myself included! It’s been a long, boring summer.
Kate McKinnon
I mean, seriously, she’s a gift.
Boots And A-Line Dresses
I wouldn’t know what to wear without them.
Doctor Who
There is an episode for virtually every mood. For a show with fantastical plots, the emotions the characters feel are very relatable, making it easy to lose yourself in the story very quickly. And some days, that’s exactly what a person needs.
Stationery
There’s nothing quite like having a coordinated stationery set. Trust me.
Comic Books
I’ve written about my love for comic books before, but it bears repeating: they are an incredible medium that can entertain while also inspire, lend courage, or help the reader find solace.
Neil Gaiman
An incredible teacher in high school introduced me to the works of Neil Gaiman, and I’ve been finding escape, comfort, and sometimes answers in his work ever since. His fans, too, are an amazing community of supportive individuals. One fan, a fantastic artist named Steve Cleff even gave me a copy of one of Gaiman’s books, so I would still be able to give it a read. That is just one example of how thoughtful his fans are, many of them obviously drawing influence from Gaiman’s work.
Friends, Family, And Colleagues
In all seriousness, I am above all else thankful for the amazing people in my life. My friends, family, and colleagues here at PopWrapped have been lifesaving, especially over this past year. It was a challenging time, but there was always someone there rooting me on each step of the way. I will forever and always be grateful for the presence of such incredible people in my life.
