Watch out Prince George, a new baby is on the way to steal the royal limelight. Because Prince Albert II of Monaco and his South African born wife, Princess Charlene have announced that they are expecting a baby!
The bundle of joy is set to replace Albert’s sister, Princess Caroline as the heir to the throne of the Principality. The royal couple has expressed their joy in a short statement. This will be Albert’s first legitimate child and thus his heir, he has had two children from previous relationships, 22-year-old Jazmin and 10-year-old Alexandre, who because they were conceived out of wedlock are barred from succeeding their father.
Albert II is the Head of State of one of the world’s smallest nations, Monaco covers only 2sq km; but unlike the majority of the crowned heads of Europe, who are nothing more than figureheads, he actually wields political power. His personal wealth of 1 billion dollars is also the second largest among the European monarchs. He is the son of Prince Rainier III, and Hollywood legend Grace Kelly, which makes him Hollywood royalty in addition to being actual royalty. His mother was recently featured in a movie titled Grace of Monaco with Nicole Kidman filling in the title role. It premiered at this years’ Cannes Film Festival.
He met his future wife, Olympian swimmer Charlene Wittstock, when he presided over a swimming race back in 2000. They were married in a lavish ceremony in Monaco on 2011, and since then her official title has been ‘Her Serene Highness, The Princess of Monaco’.
