Tonight’s NHL match-up between the Dallas Stars and the Columbus Blue Jackets came to an abrupt end earlier this evening when Stars’ player Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench after playing on the ice for 2 minutes and 38 seconds.
Teammates began frantically calling for medical attention when he collapsed and the game was stopped. Peverley was given oxygen and chest compressions until he was revived by a shock from an AED. He was then taken from the ice and rushed to the hospital.
Dr. Gil Salazar was the doctor that accompanied Peverley in the ambulance and said that the first thing Peverley said was that he wanted to get back on the ice. Peverley missed training for this season to undergo surgery for an irregular heartbeat. His teammates said that his condition is closely monitored.
The game was halted immediately due to the “emotional state of players on both teams caused by the medical emergency.” The NHL is currently working on rescheduling the game.
