After an astounding 15 seasons of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Richard Belzer – who played Sgt John Munch – has called it quits.
A series representative confirmed to E! News that Belzer’s final episode will be ‘Wonderland Story’, airing October 16th.
‘Wonderland Story’ will contain a retirement party for Munch, at a special gathering with the NYPD staff, but that isn’t all. As well as a farewell to Belzer, there will be a mystery involving one of Benson’s – Mariska Hargitay – former rape cases.
Belzer is an original cast member, joining the show in 1999; transitioning his character from Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993-99. Sgt Munch had already appeared in guest shots on Law & Order in 1996 and 1997, as well as guest shots on other shows, such as 30 Rock, The X-Files, The Wire, and Arrested Development.
There are no immediate plans for Belzer to return, however this doesn’t mean he won’t ever return; a SVU representative confirmed that nothing is being ruled out.
You can catch Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on Wednesdays at 9pm ET on NBC and the promo for Belzer’s final episode can be seen below.
