They may be called LMFAO, but rapper Rick Ross, apparently, isn’t amused by the song that made the pop duo, uncle and nephew Redfoo and SkyBlue, a household name.
Remember “Party Rock Anthem”? That song that promised to make us lose our minds and probably accomplished its goal at some point in 2011?
Well, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Ross is suing LMFAO for copyright infringement.
“Party Rock Anthem”’s infamous chorus includes “Everyday I’m shufflin’”. Ross’s complaint is that the lyric copies “Everyday I’m hustlin’” from his song “Hustlin’”, released in 2006 on his debut album.
He and the composer of “Hustlin’”, Jermaine Jackson, filed their lawsuit with the Florida federal court, and it states that, “The use of ‘Hustlin’ ‘ in ‘Party Rock Anthem’ is readily apparent, despite the slight change from ‘Everyday I’m hustlin’ …’ to ‘Everyday I’m shufflin’ …’ and constitutes, inter alia, the creation of an unauthorized derivative work.”
“The phrase is so important to the success of ‘Party Rock Anthem,’ that LMFAO launched a highly successful clothing line, Party Rock Clothing, that features the phrase on T-shirts and other clothing items,” according to the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs believe that LMFAO perform their song “in a manner to sound like” Ross’, and that it’s “an obvious attempt to capitalize on the fame and success of Hustlin’”.
Ross’ attorneys said they have warned LMFAO, but the artists have not responded.
Ross is seeking an injunction and maximum statutory damages.
LMFAO are currently on hiatus, which they announced in late 2012.
