One of the lauded drummers of all-time, Neil Peart of the band Rush, has passed away at the age of 67. On Tuesday, Peart lost his battle with brain cancer, of which he was diagnosed in 2015, a spokesperson tells PopWrapped.

Peart announced that he was retiring from the band in 2015, amid bouts with chronic pain due to tendinitis. The band subsequently announced that the band was finished with their touring career, both because of Peart’s health and guitarist Alex Lifeson’s struggle with arthritis.

Rush began in 1968, lasting almost 50 years. Peart joined the band in 1974 and the trio became one of the most iconic bands to exist, churning out hit after hit and mystifying audiences worldwide with their progressive rock chops and technical precision. Artists and bands coming of age during their rein were inspired by the band, and still holds true, even to this day.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson shared a statement on the band’s Twitter account:

It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother, and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma). We ask that friends, fans, and media alike understandably respect the family’s need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time. Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil’s name.
