Actor

Russell Crowe

, who will play Superman’s biological father in the upcoming release of Man of Steel, has taken to Twitter to reveal to audiences that Superman’s home planet of Krypton, will be destroyed in the film. In his tweet, Crowe states “ahem…as I was saying…my name is Jor El, of Krypton, as my planet dies I send 2 you my son, Kal. So he may live…”

Rumours had been circulating that there would be a potential change to the origins of Clark Kent, which said he is a genetic anomaly who is sent to Earth for his own safety, and not due to the looming destruction of the planet.

With the occasional exception, Superman’s existence as the only living Kryptonian has been central to the character of Clark Kent/Superman, since its inception in 1938.
