Fans have been accusing Katy Perry of ‘ripping off’ Sara Bareilles in her song “Roar” because of the similar drum beat and use of piano. Bareilles finally expresses her frustrations with Entertainment Weekly, particularly the fact that fans think she and Perry are rivals.
“People really felt like Katy was ripping me off, and I disagree,” said pop star Sara Bareilles, “Katy and I have known each other a really long time, she’s a friend of mine, and it seemed like there was this infusion of people wanting to create conflict and drama….It’s an old paradigm of pitting people against each other based on the idea that there’s not enough… There’s better s— to do than worry about that stuff.”
“Brave” is a relatively positive and happy song, in which the video features a myriad of people dancing in public. “Roar”, while featuring an upbeat tempo, is much more about female empowerment, and the music video features Perry literally becoming queen of the jungle. There are similarities musically, but the lyrics are about very different things.
Bareilles’ “Brave” and Perry’s “Roar” are competing along with Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors,” and Lorde’s “Royals” for Best Pop Solo Performance at this year’s Grammy’s.
When asked if Bareilles has a speech prepared for her possible victory she said, “I haven’t written anything down. I would want [it] to be authentic, so if it happened I would want to speak from my heart.”
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards airs live tonight at 8 PM.
