Scarlett Johansson Has Harsh Criticism For Superhero Films

It seems Scarlett Johansson is not very impressed with the superhero movie genre, especially towards their depiction of female characters.

In a recent interview with Refinery 29 Johansson had a few harsh words to say about the genre; “The majority of the superhero movies have not been very good. They were simply not made well.”

Although her comments may seem a bit ironic considering Johansson can be seen kicking butt in a skin-tight leather suit in The Avengers, the actress is simply criticizing the portrayal of female characters in other superhero movies.

“They [female superheroes] were [about] spinning through the air and putting your hands on your hips.”

Johansson does have a point. In a genre primarily dominated by male characters, there rarely is a strong independent female superhero much like her Avengers counterpart Black Widow.

The star is quite fond of Black Widow stating that the character has given her a “great opportunity.”

“I love it. I think it is a sensational character. It is a professional, highly skilled, dangerous, mysterious superhero. I love playing it. I think that it is rare to find a woman sexy and intelligent on the big screen, able to fight anyone (including men) and overcome them physically and emotionally, and my character does it.”

Johansson goes on to praise Avengers director Joss Whedon for his approach on tackling female superheroes.

“Joss has jumped the fence with Avengers to celebrate a female character that is not a simple ornament inside the group. He’s not interested in just selling her physical attractiveness.”

Luckily for us, Johansson will slip back into her leather cat suit and perfect her fighting skills to avenge female superhero characters as Black Widow in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
