The American period drama series Boardwalk Empire will come to an end with its fifth season.
Creator Terence Winter has confirmed that he reached this decision with HBO and the upcoming fifth season will be the last.
“After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion”, Winter explained in a statement.
HBO president Michael Lombardo said: “It has been an incredible honour to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages”.
Boardwalk Empire premiered in 2010, after the pilot episode, directed by Martin Scorsese, was picked up by HBO. It has received multiple awards, including seventeen Emmys from forty nominations and two Golden Globes.
Set during the Prohibition era, it has a multi-star cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly McDonald and Michael Shannon.
Boardwalk Empire’s last season will premiere this autumn.
