Entertainment Weekly has provided us with our very first glimpse at Shailene Woodley in Divergent! In the picture Woodley’s Beatrice “Tris” Prior is in a dangerous situation – she has taken another Dauntless initiate’s place and has to stand still and have knives thrown at her head.
Divergent, based on the first book of Veronica Roth’s acclaimed young adult series, takes place in a futuristic dystopian version of Chicago. Society is divided into five factions, each designed to uphold a particular human virtue (peace, bravery, honesty, etc.). When a child is sixteen they must choose which faction to join, based on an aptitude test. The few who don’t fit neatly into any single faction are known as “divergent”, and it’s a fact about themselves that they take to their graves. As it happens, Tris is one of them.
Woodley is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Ashley Judd, and Kate Winslet.
