Selena Gomez Encourages Female Empowerment In Seventeen Magazine’s Power Issue

In a recent interview for Seventeen’s “Power” issue, Selena Gomez was asked which rising star she thought best illustrates girl power. Despite Lorde dissing on Gomez in the past, Selena had no qualms about sending praise the way of the breakout singer best known for her song “Royals.”

“There is one artist that I think is very powerful,” Selena began to say, “She doesn’t really like me, but that’s all right. Her name’s Lorde and she’s really cool. I mean, I do think her message is very powerful. She’s very young but she’s got a lot to say and that’s great, so more power to her.”

In an age where trash talking seems to be young pop-stars favorite past time, it’s a fantastic revelation to see Selena taking the high road.

She went on to say: “I think girl power can mean so many different things, especially because we live in a time where it’s so competitive with females—whether it’s fashion or boys or friends and boys and boys and boys. It’s really unfortunate. I feel like girl power is almost more powerful and more special than anything you’re competing for.”

So how can a girl find her inner power? “If you’re able to look yourself in the mirror every day with the decisions that you make, that’s where power starts,” Gomez said. “And sometimes you’ll have moments where you feel weak, but they’re supposed to encourage you. They’re supposed to push you and motivate you. I feel like that’s something that I always try to do is look at myself in the mirror and really what I’ve done and every day what decision I want to make.”
