Premiering an agonizing three weeks after its release across the pond, season three of BBC’s Sherlock aired on PBS on Sunday. Four million viewers tuned in to see how Holmes survived his fall from St. Bart’s Hospital in “The Empty Hearse“, and the knockout ratings suggest that no one is bored with the detective in the funny hat.
Executive Producer of PBS Masterpiece, Rebecca Eaton, announced that Sunday’s audience was the biggest the franchise had ever seen. PBS’s Downton Abbey accompanied the premiere of Sherlock, raking in 8.4 million viewers.
Benedict Cumberbatch, the brit donning the famous moniker, spoke about his future on Sherlock at the TCA Winter Press TV Tour.
“I’m going to keep going with it,” he said. “I love it. I find it very invigorating.”
Show runner Steven Moffat said that Sherlock would “continue until Benedict gets too famous and he’ll refuse.”
Season three of Sherlock concluded in the UK last week with the episode “His Last Bow”, making the finale the most-watched program in the UK. The finale drew 8.77 million viewers, earning a 32.1% share –that’s nearly the equivalent of the Super Bowl.
Co-creators Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss say they already have story ideas for Sherlock season four. Get to work boys; obviously the world can’t get enough of Sherlock Holmes.
