Move over, Moriarty. There’s a new master of crime in town, and his brother is Hannibal Lecter.

What? Yes. Lars Mikkelsen, brother to Mads Mikkelsen of NBC’s Hannibal, is the latest baddie on Sherlock, and the most fearsome one yet.

Sherlock showrunner, Steven Moffat, described Mikkelsen’s character, Charles Augustus Magnussen as “utterly terrifying.”

Sherlock’s latest foe is based on Charles Augustus Milverton, a “master blackmailer” from the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories.

“We had a notion that maybe he might be American and at that point we kept the original name,” Moffat explained at a BAFTA screening of the series finale episode “His Last Bow” on January 8.

“It was actually [producer] Sue [Vertue] who originally suggested that we have a look at Lars. I then went onto a website and looked up all the Danish names that sounded a bit like ‘Milverton’ and came up with Magnussen,” said Moffat.

Andrew Scott’s BAFTA-winning performance of Moriarty is showstopper in the first two series of Sherlock, raising the bar for Magnussen in series three.

“We needed an utterly terrifying villain and Lars just scares the crap out of you the moment he shows up!” said Moffat.

“His Last Vow” airs on BBC One at 8:30 pm. on Sunday, January 12.
