In the world of fashion, what sets you apart from other designers can lead to big time success. Grace Ciao, a 22-year-old student from Singapore, has found her signature style –using flower petals instead of ink to design dresses– and the results are as gorgeous as they sound.
Ciao told BuzzFeed that she’s “had a love of fashion since she was a little girl,” often making new outfits for her Barbie dolls from scraps of fabric given by her grandmother. The inspiration for Ciao’s whimsical creations came from a wilting rose a boy had given her. “I remembered how beautiful it used to be and wanted to ‘preserve’ this beauty. So I made fashion illustrations out of them,” she said.
The 22-year-old’s favorite flora to work with are carnations and lilies because of their range of color. “They help me create prints which I otherwise couldn’t have thought of,” she said. “I think petals work really well for illustration also because their delicacy and exquisiteness mimic those of a soft fabric.”
Ciao currently attends business school in Singapore but sketches on the side, designing everything from everyday wear to bridal wear and even haute couture. Check out GraceCiao.com to see more work from this budding designer.
