Over the years, we’ve seen Snow White, Alice, Cinderella and many other favorite fairy tale characters come to life on the big screen. Soon, another favorite fairy tale will be adapted and we’ll be taken under the sea! Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale, The Little Mermaid, will be adapted into a live-action film and The Bling Ring’s Sofia Coppola is in talks to direct the future adaptation.

Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Abi Morgan (Shame) wrote previous drafts of the script. However, Caroline Thompson, best known for writing the screenplays for several Tim Burton films, is next to rewrite the script.

Coppola is also known for directing The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and 2006’s film Marie Antoinette, all films with adult themes. Directing The Little Mermaid would slightly be a different direction from the past films she’s done.

But it is still unknown as to which direction the film will go. Most viewers are familiar with Disney’s version of the sea princess and her happy ending with Prince Eric, but in the novel by Andersen, the young mermaid doesn’t end up with her prince. She ends up brokenhearted and becomes a “daughter of air”.

I can’t wait to see which ending this adaptation will take on! Now that a director is attached to the project, I’m sure many actresses will be attached to potentially playing the role of the Little Mermaid. Who’s on your list to play the classic character?
