Something Rotten with Kristie Kerwin

PopWrapped talks to “Something Rotten’s” Kristie Kerwin. The show makes its way to SHN San Francisco’s legendary Orpheum Theater this week.

What better way to ring in the end of summer than by an evening at the theater? I can’t imagine a better type of magic then that. Especially of the story involves the pop culture staple that is the Broadway musical and features the original Rockstar; Shakespeare! I cannot wait to go see “Something Rotten” when it begins its run at SHN San Francisco’s legendary Orpheum Theater. But in the meantime I got the chance to sit down with castmember, the talented Kristie Kerwin!

PopWrapped: Tell me a little bit about Something Rotten, and your part.

Kristie Kerwin: Something Rotten is an upbeat entertaining musical comedy that everyone can enjoy!  It tells the story of two brothers (the Bottom Brothers) in the Renaissance era who are desperate to write a hit show that is better than Shakespeare! Hilarity ensues as they seek help from a soothsayer who tells them the hits of the future are “Muuuuusicals.”  The show relates to today’s pop culture, referencing many modern musicals throughout and even includes a Shakespeare with rock star swagger, played by Adam Pascal (who originated the role Roger in “Rent”).

I play one of the many characters that bring the era to life throughout the show, dancing, singing and acting.  I also cover both principal women, Portia (the Reverend Brother Jeremiah’s daughter) and Bea (the hard working, strong wife of Nick Bottom).

PW: How long have you been doing Something Rotten?

KK: I’ve been with the show since rehearsals for the Broadway National Tour began in New York, December 2016

PW: What is your favorite scene to perform and your favorite scene to watch, in the show?

KK: My favorite scene to perform AND to watch is “A Musical.” It is an all-out no holds barred musical comedy romp involving nearly the entire cast- the ultimate homage to musicals.  If you’re a musical theater buff, try catching every nod to all the great musicals; If you’re new to musical theater, sit back relax and enjoy the comedy and excitement. It’s such fun for everyone.

PW: What’s it like coming back to San Francisco?

KK: I love it! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I’m thrilled when I get to do theater in the area.  Last time I played San Francisco was with Anything Goes, where I got the chance to perform Reno Sweeny.  It’s such a treat when your friends and family come to support you and cheer you on! I also love visiting my sister, Katie Kerwin-Gielniak, and can’t wait to see her new studio Broadway Babies & Kids! Playing the SHN Orpheum Theatre with Something Rotten brings back such great memories of when my sister and I performed White Christmas together here!

PW: What has been your favorite show you’ve performed in?

KK: Something Rotten!  Picking a favorite show is like picking your favorite child. They are all so near and dear to my heart! Another recent favorite was playing Bille Bendix in Nice Work If You Can Get It at Sacramento Music Circus last summer!

PW: What is your dream role that you’ve yet to play?

KK: So many!  But if I had to pick one—Mama Rose in Gypsy—I saw my sister, Katie Kerwin-Gielniak play the role at San Mateo High School and it’s what made me want to get into theater.

PW: What’s next for your after Something Rotten?

KK: Keep on livin’ the dream!

Thanks to Kristie Kerwin for taking the time between her time on stage to chat! “Something Rotten” begins its run in San Francisco on August 15th and runs through September 10th.
