Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s movie, which will premiere on February 28 nationwide, is a success among Christian leaders, including Pastor Rick Warren. The leaders are renting theaters across 10 cities to take place in the premiere. This move reflects their confidence in Burnett and Downey’s work; Son of God is an adaption from The Bible, a History channel miniseries hit that is also ran by both.
The leaders say that watching the movie is a natural chance to evangelize, and Warren’s vested interest is explained by the curriculum tied to the movie that was published by LifeWay Christian Resources.
That’s a great chance for theaters, and Cinemark Theaters has seen that. It’s scheduling a few large-scale buyouts on February 27, said James Meredith, head of marketing and communications. “The interest level for meeting, events, screenings and buyouts seems to be on par with that of major blockbuster, tentpole or franchise movies,” he said.
Burnett and Downey have enlisted support from religious leaders, among them Texas megachurch pastor T.D. Jakes and Roman Catholic Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles. They also contacted the evangelical relief organization, Compassion International, to distribute tickets to churches.
To Burnett, this movie is a very different thing to him; he’s said never seen a buyout before. “There aren’t many things that could garner this kind of support. People are going to watch the movie collectively, in community.”
