Could Jay-Z be facing some problems with copyright? Recently, Jay accused Chauncey Mahan, a well-known sound engineer, of stealing some recordings. Mahan turned the tables and has now responded with a lawsuit of his own against Mr. Carter, and this could turn out to be a big deal in the music industry.
What is Mahan’s lawsuit about? Well, he wants to, at minimum, be named a joint author of a number of Jay-Z’s songs. Their collaboration dates back to 1999 when Mahan worked with Jay on the album, Vol 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter. Mahan, who kept all of the recordings, feels like he has some ownership of them.
In order for Mahan to win his case, he will need to show that he had an integral role in writing these songs, and he has to prove why Jay-Z and his team are not sole owners of the recordings.
Why is Jay fighting this? He claims that Mahan was an independent contractor, not an employee, and thus has no rights to the work.
This is certainly something that has come into play in the recording business for a number of years and it is something that keeps coming up. You can be sure that people in the industry will be watching this lawsuit very closely.
