Veteran stand-up comedian David Brenner has died. The influential comic passed away March 15th at his home in New York City after an extensive battle with cancer. The 78-year-old had continued to work steadily through his illness including a four day casino stint in December of last year.
Brenner was perhaps best known as a staple of The Tonight Show, particularly in the 70s and 80s, racking up over 150 appearances on the program. Brenner also regularly appeared on other talk shows, news programs, and game shows throughout his career. Brenner’s stand-up tours were also consistently successful and spawned four HBO comedy specials.
Brenner’s comedy included observational, social, and political material, and younger comedians including Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Reiser cited him as an influence in developing their style.
Brenner had also gained a reputation as a kind and generous figure who was always willing to lend a hand to the next generation of comics.
Comedian Richard Lewis issued a statement saying, “He mentored me from day one. His passing leaves a hole in my life that can never be replaced.”
