Star Wars fans, December 18, 2015 will be a day long remembered. That’s right, we have confirmation that Star Wars Episode VII will be released that day.
In a press release from Disney and Lucasfilm, Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios said, “We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.”
This news will come as a shock to some fans as Star Wars films are typically released in May following the tradition of the original film, Star Wars: A New Hope, which was released on May 25, 1977. Episode VII was initially set for a summer 2015 release, however, with the recent news that original screenwriter, Michael Arndt had been replaced by J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, there were rumours that some of the creative team were pushing for a 2016 release date. At the time, it was reported that the studio’s CEO Robert Iger was “adamant” that the film will be a 2015 release. It appears that the December 2016 date may be some sort of compromise.
Pre-production is moving swiftly along, with casting is currently underway for the film. Filming is scheduled to being in spring next year at Pinewood Studios.
