Good news, Sherlockians! Steven Moffat, head writer and co-creator of the beloved detective show, has assured us all that season 4 will air “as quickly” as possible! The next two seasons of the show have already been planned out. This latest news was revealed at the BAFTA screening of “His Last Vow” on January 8.

But if there’s anything we BBC followers have learned, it’s that Moffat always lies.

Let’s hope he’s not lying about this!

In recent interviews, Moffat mentioned how the crew has had to plan filming of the show around the main actors’ movie careers, which have lately taken off! Martin Freeman has taken on The Hobbit trilogy as Bilbo Baggins, while Benedict Cumberbatch has become a fire breathing dragon and the cause of the near destruction of the USS Enterprise (in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek: Into Darkness, respectively).

“Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] are apparently in movies!” Moffat joked. “So we’ve got to schedule around them, but we’ll get them made as quickly as we can.”

But even with all the speed of Superman, they’ve got to set a date! Series producer Sue Vertue assured us, “we’re working on it—it’s dates.”

The recent long and arduous hiatus—two years too long, but who’s counting—ended on New Year’s Day with the first episode of the third season. This season will end this coming Sunday, January 12, with “His Last Vow.”

Vertue reveals the difficulty of finding time to meet and plan during the program’s extended holiday.

“We couldn’t get together before then. We did worry that [in] two years, you might forget about us, but clearly not!”

The build up that was created by the hiatus may have contributed to the show’s recent ratings and ultimate success.

Sherlock started very well, the second series did better than the first and now the third is doing better than the second. It shows the benefits of starvation – put things on less often!”

“His Last Vow” will air in the UK on Sunday, January 12. The US will get its debut of Sherlock’s third season the following Sunday, January 19.
