The 2013 Christmas episode of Doctor Who has begun filming, and it’s going to be a heartwrencher. Matt Smith’s final episode as the Eleventh Doctor will air this Christmas, and showrunner Steven Moffat is already preparing fans for the worst.

Though effusively praising Smith as “funny,” “clever,” and “inventive,” Moffat had equally good things to say about the upcoming Twelfth incarnation of the infamous Time Lord. The Hour’s Peter Capaldi has been announced as Smith’s replacement, and Moffat calls him a “genius-level actor.”

Doctor Who returns on November 23rd, when the 75-minute 50th Anniversary Special “The Day of the Doctor” will be simulcast worldwide.
