For all you Sherlock fans who think this season’s plots and devices are the product of the writers spending copious amounts of time on the internet—think again.
Steven Moffat, head writer and co-creator of the hit detective drama, has assured fans that the writers and creators are not influenced by fan fiction. He says that, while the “creative response” is “amazing,” the relationships that have formed between the staff and the fans is “a one-way thing.”
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that [fan fiction is] the cradle of the next generation of television and fiction producers. It’s hugely important. But it’s a one-way thing.”
“What happens is – and I’m part of this – you see something you love, then you start doing your own version of it. Then you start disagreeing with the actual version. You think ‘My version’s better’ – then you discover that you’ve actually made something entirely different and you go off and do your own thing.”
The creativity of others sparking the continuation or growth of another thing, whether it be a television show, a movie franchise, or a book series.
Sounds like fan fiction!
But even with the multitude of creative responses to the show, Moffat continues to keep a professional distance between the team and the show’s audience.
“I find it exciting and thrilling and wonderful that you get that creative response to a TV show. But interacting with fans? No, that’s not how it works, because in the end they’ve got to cut loose from the mothership and do their own thing – and they will!”
He is referring to the BAFTA screening of “His Last Vow,” which brought fans from all over the industry. This screening marked the end of the third series of the show, which UK fans will get to see tonight, January 12, at 8.30PM. Fans in the US will get the full third series starting January 19.
The fourth and fifth series are already being planned! Fans can expect to own series three on Blu-Ray and DVD as early as January 20, 2014.
