The sad news of the passing of Scott Asheton, the drummer and founding member of proto punk band Iggy & the Stooges was confirmed by the band’s frontman, Iggy Pop, paying tribute to his fellow band member on Facebook.

“My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me. My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.”

James Williamson has expressed his last communications with Scott, “My only comfort is that he reached out to me in an email about a week or two ago, saying that he was thinking of me and the good times we had together and that he would like to make some music with me.”

Scott had performed with the band on their 2013 LP Ready to Die, after temporarily leaving the band while recovering from an unspecified injury in 2011. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Tributes from all over the world are pouring in for the tragic loss of the drummer.
