Summer Starts Early This Year For Hollywood

NULL

Vanessa Dias

Staff Writer

Summer usually starts in June, but to Hollywood studios, this season is starting earlier; April will be the month of first runs.

To get started, the Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: the Winter Soldier will be released on April 4. A week later, Fox will first run the animated sequel “Rio 2” and Transcendence by Warner Bros will be released on April 18.

Theater owners have said that some months are viewed as “undesirable wastelands” like September, January and April; they ask to studios to program bigger movies throughout the calendar.

Since summer is so crowed, the studios have no choice. Also, there are evidences that even pics can prosper in nontraditional seasons.

Fast Five opened in late April 2011 and reignited that franchise; Gravity became a success after releasing on October 4 and Warner’s got a summerlike $69.1 million opening for The Lego Movie on a weekend in February.

As said Disney distribution Chief, Dave Hollisof, “We’ve had great success in March with Oz the Great and Powerful and Alice in Wonderland. There’s less competition in play and a lot more room to hold.”
