Team StarKid, the team behind A Very Potter Musical, Holy Musical Batman and Starship, have released the official trailer for their latest parody musical, Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier. Among the revealing looks at the production was the news all Starkids have been waiting for… the date which the musical will premiere online.
Twisted takes the story of Aladdin and twists it with a little bit of Wicked, telling the story through the eyes of the villainous Ja’far.
Directed by Brian Holden, Twisted was written by Nick Lang, Matt Lang and Eric Kahn Gale with music from AJ Holmes and lyrics by Kayley McMahon.
If you don’t want to know who is playing who in Twisted, I suggest you look away, as the following cast list may be considered a little bit spoiler-y.
Dylan Saunders stars as Ja’far with Jeff Blim as Aladdin, Rachel Soglin as The Princess, Joe Walker as Prince Achmed, Meredith Stepien as Sherrezade, Nick Gage as The Sultan, Jim Povolo as The Captain of the Guards, and Lauren Lopez as the Monkey. The ensemble cast also features Robert Manion, Jaime Lyn Beatty, Alex Paul and Denise Donovan.
Twisted began as a project on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. With a goal of $35,000 needed to put the musical into production, they exceeded this figure within hours of the project going live. After 30 days, the number had reached a grand total of $142,564 with over 3,500 people pledging their support.
Oh, and in case you’re thinking that the voice narrating at the start of the video sounds familiar… It is none other than Jonathan Freeman – the man behind the voice of Ja’far from the original Disney production.
Twisted will be made available via the official StarKid YouTube channel on Thanksgiving Day – November 28. The musical will also be made available on DVD.
