In the trailer you find yourself in an intense stare down with Lester Ballard (Sc ott Haze) with a voice over introducing the troubled man. “He was of German and Irish bloods. His name was Lester Ballard, a child of god. Much like yourself perhaps.”

Haze does a good job at making you feel uncomfortable if you ask me.

The film is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same title. It follows Ballard, a violent outcast who turns to murder and necrophilia. In an official statement for the Venice Film Festival, Franco explains that the film shows “a man willing to commune with the dead because they were the only ones who wouldn’t reject him.”

Franco also describes Lester as “a disturbed individual, and in no way is his behavior condonable, but in the realms of art, a character like him can be used to study what is inside all of us.”

Aside from Scott Haze starring as the title character, Child of God also stars Tim Blake Nelson, Jim Parrack and Franco himself.

Premiering this weekend at the 70th Annual Venice Film Festival, Child of God will be the third film this year that Franco has directed that will be making its rounds around the film festival circuit.

Next week, it will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.
