Ted Cruz has announced his bid as a candidate for the GOP nomination in next year’s presidential race. Cruz’s announcement makes him the first official candidate in for the 2016 run.
Early Monday morning, the Texas senator tweeted, “I’m running for President and I hope to earn your support!”

Cruz officially kicked off his campaign with a morning speech at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Liberty is a Christian college founded by televangelist Jerry Falwell.
A popular figure in Tea Party circles, the Republican senator is known for his for staunch conservative and evangelical Christian leanings. Cruz is a vocal opponent of Obamacare, marriage equality, and abortion rights.
Known for his theatrical rhetoric, Cruz recently upset a three-year-old girl at a pre-campaign rally by telling her, “Your world is on fire.”
Cruz’s potential competitors for the GOP nomination include former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.
