Growing up in Utah with an adoptive family and raised in the Mormon Church, Tessa Kaye found strength, solace and comfort in music, so much so that she moved to the West Coast in early adulthood to pursue her passion for it. Today, the music Tessa makes brings with it a blend of infectious pop soundscapes and, lyrics that are both honest – often written from a personal experience viewpoint – and therefore able to connect with an audience.
With a growing fanbase and streaming numbers on several services regularly on the rise, Tessa might still be considered a relative unknown to many but her latest single “Smile More”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is likely to change that. The song, which addresses the double standard of how men and women have been allowed to express themselves in society, is one many who hear it will no doubt be able to identify with and relate to and, with a particularly impressive soulful vocal, is perhaps her strongest release to date.
She says of the song: “Smile More speaks to the double standard of how men and women have been allowed to express themselves in society. It’s a weird, ridiculous expectation people place on women, to look pleasant 100% of the time. Every woman I know has stories of times they’ve been told to smile… usually from men, and complete strangers at that. I’ve also experienced this countless times myself since I was a little girl. It’s something I’ve never understood, and grown quite tired of, hence this song being born. Smile More is a fun, care-free, warm, upbeat anthem about not needing to please anyone outside of yourself! It’s not your job to be aesthetically pleasing those around you. My song Smile More is to simply say: you don’t owe anyone anything.”
