My cinephile sensibilities don’t want to believe it, but the public has clearly spoken by voting for The Empire Strikes Back in a recent poll to find the greatest film of all time.
The British film magazine Empire recently held a poll where thousands of fans vote for what they think the greatest film of all time is. The public showed their adoration for the second film in the original Star Wars trilogy, with it getting the first position on the poll and the title of ‘Greatest Film of All Time.’
Empire‘s definitive list of the ‘500 Greatest Films of All Time’, which was voted by a variety of fans, filmmakers and critics, and released in 2008, puts The Empire Strikes Back in the impressive position of third place, with the top spot going to a more acceptable choice for the title, The Godfather.
This year’s list doesn’t show many major changes, with the runner-up to The Empire Strikes Back being…The Godfather. The Dark Knight received third place, and films such as Pulp Fiction, Inception, Jaws and The Shawshank Redemption also being included in the top ten.
Whether you’re like me and you think this choice is a little misguided, or you love it, one can’t deny that the entire Star Wars series are historical icons, nevermind cultural. You can view the full top ten list below:
1. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
2. The Godfather
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
7. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
8. Jaws
9. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
10. Inception
