Curious things can happen when you rummage into iOS 7 software builds.
Hamza Sood, an iOS developer, discovered apparent hints of the new Apple TV in the Airplay framework and shared the news with 9to5Mac.
Indeed, when looking closely at the strings, a reference to an Apple TV 4,1 can be found.
The current Apple TV that was updated in 2013 is listed as Apple TV3, 2 while the previous Apple TV3,1 refers to the 1080p device launched in March 2012. With such a jump from 3,2 to 4,1, one can only expect a major change in the internals and not a simple update of the set-top box.
On top of that, software builds also references iOS 7Game Controller framework. Different rumors have suggested that this new Apple TV would include support for Bluetooth controllers, an Apple-Game Store, or the integration of a TV tuner.
For the time being, we will just have to wait (impatiently) and see! According to macrumors.com, the announcement of the new AppleTV could come in April,
“Apple is aiming to have the device available for sale by the Christmas holidays, though the release date could change because the company is still in the process of securing new agreements with programming and distribution partners, said two people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private.”
