The sons of Odin take control of the box office, and are set to again, with Thor: The Dark World making $35 million plus! But it may only hold its throne for a short while, as the much-awaited The Hunger Games: Catching Fire inches closer to its November 22 release date.
The gods of thunder and trickery may have competition in The Best Man sequel, which is expected to out-perform with a $35 million weekend, but will most likely land in the high teens. This will give it the silver medal as far as recent opening weekends go, living up to the cult classic status of its predecessor.
Thor: The Dark World earned about $86 million last weekend, and it anticipated to gross somewhere in the $30 million range, leaning toward the higher numbers. This leaves the movie’s week gap drop between roughly 55—60%.
The Marvel film opens up this holiday season, and is set to run through Thanksgiving into early December. Yet even they cannot hold everyone’s attention for long. Catching Fire and Disney’s newest animated feature, Frozen, are set to dominate the box office upon their release in late November.
What some may call “award-friendly” movies have also begun to pop up on viewers’ radars! Paramount is releasing Nebraska, starring Alexander Payne, in several Los Angeles and New York locations. Fox brings locations for The Book Thief up to 29 from 4 the previous weekend—the film averaged $26 thousand opening per screen.
Even with their modest film budgets, The Best Man and Best Man Holiday have each earned Universal a considerable amount of money. Their grossing box office sums give the movie giant very little need to worry.
But Thor can knock them down a few pegs.
Thor: The Dark World is in theaters now.
