Legendary actor, Robert De Niro, recently showed his softer side in a new documentary about his father.
His father, Robert De Niro, Sr. was a New York based artist. He was also gay. According to De Niro, Jr., he felt the time was right to shed light on his father’s legacy and truly reflect on how attitudes have changed towards the gay community since his father was alive.
“It was my responsibility to make a documentary about him,” De Niro said in an interview with Out Magazine. “I was always planning on doing it, but never did. Then Jane Rosenthal, my partner at Tribeca [Enterprises], said, “We should start doing that now.” It was not intended to be on HBO. It was just something I wanted to do.”
The documentary, titled “Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr,” showed that he was conflicted about being gay throughout his life. Though De Niro, Sr. has been gone for more than 20 years, De Niro, Jr. has preserved his studio, located in SoHo.
The film will air on HBO on June 9th.
