The Purge attracted tons of attention with its unique (and inexpensive) online marketing, and the trailers. They painted the movie as a scary trip into the dark side of human nature:
All crime in the world is at an all-time low due to the purge, a day in which all crime is legal.
The film pulled in a massive $36.4 million dollars this weekend, but seeing as the numbers after Thursday night and Friday alone were already at $16.7 million this was predicted.
The Purge made about 12 times what it took to actually make the film – which was only $3 million.
Early predictions had The Internship finishing in the second slot in this weekend’s box office list, with about $18-19 million, but it fell short with $19.1 million to both Fast & Furious 6 ($19.8 million) and Now You See Me ($19.5 million).
Next weekend both Man of Steel and This is the End open, which do you think will take the top spot?
