AMC announced that a companion show for the hit zombie drama was in the works back in September 2013.
Some rumors have suggested that the spinoff could be a prequel, but chances of seeing familiar faces on the new show are slim. In October, TWD creator Robert Kirkman revealed that the spin-off would take place in a “really different location with completely different people” so the series will venture away from Georgia.
“We’re… treating the spin-off as a completely separate entity,” executive producer Gregory Nicotero revealed to Channel Guide Magazine. “That was something that was very, very important when the notion of a companion series was even brought up.”
“Many of us – the actors and the executive producers – wanted to make sure that anything we did, we didn’t want it to diminish our story, our storyline, our characters and the momentum that we have,” he said. “So the intent is that [the new show] is going to be its own standalone world.”
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on February 9 to resume its fourth season, and the spin-off is set to launch in 2015.
