For nearly 20 years, Warcraft has taken over the MMORPG world by storm.
With five board games, a collectable trading card game, countless novels and 7,700,000 subscribers, the gaming franchise is ready for its next big challenge: conquering the Silver Screen!
Recently, Universal Pictures revealed that the pop culture fixture would have a film adaptation that is scheduled to be released a week before Christmas 2015.
Multiple outlets including Crave Online, Digital Spy and GameSpot have reported that more details about the 2015 feature-length film have been released.
According to Digital Spy, the movie is going to focus on first contact between humans and the orcs with focus on the characters Anduin Lothar and Durotan.
One revelation included the fact that Blizzard Entertainment (the company that created the Warcraft franchise)’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams reassured fans that the film would avoid the same sad fates that previous video game movies faced (See Super Mario Bros., BloodRayne & Double Dragon as examples of duds).
“At the end of the day, because we recognize that there has not been–I’m sorry to say–a spectacular video game movie, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t rush it and we didn’t just try to push something out and do wrong things,” said Sams, in an interview with GameSpot. “And we also made this decision that we don’t want to make a video game movie. What we wanted to make is a great fantasy movie that the source material happens to be coming from a video game franchise.”
Source Code’s Duncan Jones will direct the film and will co-write Warcraft’s screenplay with Charles Leavitt. Award-winning visual effects artist Bill Westenhoffer (Life of PI) will assist in bringing the Warcraft world to life. Vikings actor Travis Fimmel is the only actor to sign on to the picture.
