Michael Douglas has suggested that there are still actors in Hollywood who still feel the need to hide their sexuality in order to protect their careers.
The 68 year old Oscar winning actor and producer made the comments in an interview to Shortlist during his press junket for the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, that he thinks “there are a couple of people out there who have not come out in the spirit of protecting their careers and livelihoods” in response to the question of would the public struggle with an openly gay actor playing a straight role.
Douglas also recalls meeting Liberace with his father Kirk, when he was 12 years old:
“He just stopped to say hello, this guy in this Rolls-Royce convertible with sunlight bouncing off the gold and diamonds round his fingers, round his neck. His hair was perfect. And he just looked like this happy guy. He was a wonder, really well-liked, really popular, very generous, great party thrower. That was about the only time.”
Douglas also commented that Liberace’s sexuality didn’t matter to his fans due to the fun he brought to people.
Behind the Candelabra premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month and screened for US audiences on HBO last Sunday (May 26). It opens in the UK June 7.
