Get Pumped For “Halloween 3: AwesomeLand” This Week On Modern Family

Claire wants a scary Halloween, Jay wants hair, and Cam balances Lily and his career. What could possibly go wrong on Modern Family? Read on to find out.

Modern Family, like many long-running sitcoms, has had its fair share of Halloween-themed episodes. In the past, the Halloween episode has centered around Claire trying her best to scare her neighbors, and on one occasion, she literally almost scared a man to death. This year however, Claire had to work, leaving Phil in charge of the decorations and the creating of  “AwesomeLand”.

The new neighbors introduced in last week’s episode, Ronnie and Amber (played by Steve Zahn and Andrea Anders), returned to challenge the Dunphy’s (mostly Claire) to a “Scariest House on the Street” contest, which caused Claire to create a psychiatric hospital themed garden, destroying AwesomeLand. With a well-timed lie about Amber having a trip to an asylum, which to be fair is perfectly plausible, AwesomeLand is recreated and, needless to say, the Dunphy’s did not win the competition, much to Claire’s distaste.

Gloria once again took charge of the Halloween costumes, choosing to go as Princess Fiona, leaving Jay as Shrek, which personally I thought was a perfect outfit. Jay decided he does not want to be an ogre this year and spontaneously picks his own costume, opting for Prince Charming (complete with wig with a Donkey costume for Joe). After losing his wig though, he looked uncannily similar to Franklin instead and seriously considered getting a hair plug. Gloria reminds him that he only had four more hairs when she married him, so she loved him without a full head of hair anyway.

The Tucker-Pritchetts are struggling to keep up with all of their responsibilities this week; Mitch is stressed due to a three-case losing streak at work and a possible fourth. Cam is trying to coach the football team, as well as take Lily to her Halloween Parade– without actually knowing the details. Cam’s main issue though, was his inability to find Waldo, which became a real problem because Lily was dressed as Waldo, so he couldn’t find her in the crowd!

I liked this episode; it was upbeat and fun, although Phil’s Halloween decorations were certainly weird. My favorite moment was Cam’s line: “I haven’t gone out with a white beard since I took my cousin Sally to Prom. Lily explain my joke.”

This episode was dedicated to the late Elizabeth Pena, who played Gloria’s mother on the show.
