One of the most wonderful aspects of soccer culture is the passion the supporters have for the beautiful game. When that passion gets taken too far however, problems tend to arise, but when it’s the soccer club’s mascot that indulges a bit too much the result is equal parts tragic and hilarious.
Such was the case last Saturday, when Austria Vienna took to the pitch to play Wiener Neustadt in a league match in the Austrian Bundesliga (the top flight of professional soccer in the country). Vienna’s mascot, a lion named Super Leo, was taking part in the club’s celebration of Löwenfest, or the Lion Festival, to celebrate his birthday.
Apparently he celebrated a bit too much, as he took to the pitch clearly intoxicated and sans head before collapsing. Medical personnel were on hand to make sure he was ok after refusing to get up, who were promptly thanked by being pushed away so Super Leo could proudly walk of the pitch on his own. Super Leo ended up being alright other than by all indications he being simply and devastatingly trashed.
